Well, back in the days when everyone was squatting and travelling in buses and generally having a good time,Maggie Thatcher put the kybosh on fun with the Criminal Justice Bill.
What happened next was that all of my previously pot smoking veggie healthfreak squatter type friends suddenly developed a taste for the class A drugs that seemed to flood London town at the same time.
So I suppose it was inevitable that we'd all have a go-we were all earning well and cocaine seemed to be a staple at most parties I went to in those days. Heroin was something I had avoided for many years-just knowing how much I would like it and true to my instinct when I eventually smoked some after an over indulgent night I was seduced. However I did steer clear for a few more years into my late 20's.
I met my partner at a festival in the 80's.He was 2years clean at that time. After approx 2 years together he started to dabble again and I was drawn in to the web.
Much madness ensued-some of which I may enlighten you with at a later date-we ended up using for about 15years.
Shortly after I started using(please note at no point did I ever share a needle with anyone including my partner-but equipment-spoon/filter was shared with him) I became very poorly and turned yellow. My Dr diagnosed nonA non B hepatitis at the time and I was sick for over a year during which time I lost my job and about 3 and 1/2 stone dropping to under 7stone.
At the end of which I was told that was that, liver functions back to normal-off you go.
I have never felt fully well since.
4 years on,my partner was diagnosed with Hep C and I knew from that moment there was a good chance that I had the virus.
I kicked the habit with the help of buprenorphine, fantastic stuff, unlike that evil toxic green brew methadone-it works! I'm not saying it was quick but it was successful and I've not used since 2002.The buprenorphine detox took about 18months-2years during which time I left scuzzy London and my partner and moved to a rented bungalow in the hills.I needed to get my mind and body healthy before getting tested which I eventually did in November 2005 having had ongoing liver pain, fatigue and joint pains.
I avoided calling the doctor for the next 3 weeks so that Christmas wouldn't be tarnished with the news but my GP rang thru the results a week before Christmas 2005-positive for hep C-the hospital will be in touch.......
